PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University field hockey team were at home on Friday for the Empire 8 Championship Tournament semifinal match up against Houghton University. After a battle, the Cardinals fell by a final score of 3-0. The Cardinals end the season with a 8-11 overall record. Houghton University advances with a 14-5 record.
Fisher started the first quarter with two penalty corners, both taken by Audrey Grieb. Both corners created opportunities for the Cardinals to get on the board. The first shot was taken by Sam Choate, the second taken by Molly Fisher, both shots were saved by the Houghton goalie. Gianna Palma had two shots in the first half, both off penalty corners by Grieb, they were blocked by the Highlanders defense. Houghton snuck two goals in the first 30 minutes of play. The Cardinals took a total of eight penalty corners in the first half, all coming just shy of a tally, but ultimately, unable to capitalize. The first half ended with Houghton up by two.
As the second half began, the Cardinals defense held strong with the Houghton offense getting three shots off in the first four minutes of play. The Cardinals answered back by taking the next two scoring opportunities. Choate's shot could not get by the Houghton goalie and Fisher had hers kicked away. At the 41 minute mark Houghton tallied another goal, now up by three. Senja Matson saw action in the fourth quarter, getting one save on one shot. As the second half wrapped up, Choate took the last scoring opportunity for the Cardinals off a penalty corner by Grieb. At the end of 60 minutes of play, the Cardinals fell to Houghton by a final score of 3-0.
