Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cardinals Comeback To Defeat Golden Eagles

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team began the last week of the regular season with a road contest at SUNY Brockport. Despite going down 2-0, the Cardinals fought back to win three straight sets and the match. The Cardinals now hold a record of 17-6 and the Golden Eagles drop to 18-6 with this result.

The first set was a preview of things to come, as the two teams went back and forth and were tied at 18-18. A trio of errors set the Cardinals back and the deficit grew to four. The Golden Eagles secure the first set victory by a final score of 25-21. The second set saw a similar result to the first, where the two teams were tied 17-17, before Fisher fell behind by four at 22-18. The Cardinals did climb back with kills by Sydney French and Lindsey DeBonis, and a service ace by Kiana Walker. Unfortunately, they could not complete the comeback and dropped the set, going down 2-0.

Fisher did not give up on the match and began their comeback. The Cardinals jumped to an 8-1 lead in the third frame and they did not give it up. They constantly answered Brockport's scoring to maintain their lead, and claimed the set, 25-18. Fisher got off to another fast start in the fourth set, jumping in front 7-2. The Cardinals took advantage of Brockport mistakes, and kills be Walker and Kristen McIntosh helped lock in the victory and even the match at two sets a piece.

In the fifth set, the two teams traded initial points, but then the Cardinals began to extend their advantage with kills by French and aces by Walker. Two kills by DeBonis put Fisher ahead 10-5 and then they traded points with the Golden Eagles and a kill by Walker capped off the set and match victory.

Leaty finished the day with 41 assists and 14 digs. DeBonis, French and Walker all finished with double-digit kills. French had 13 kills and Walker finished with 12 to go along with 17 digs. Debonis recorded 15 kills, which led the team, and 23 digs.

Up next is a three-match weekend, starting with a road game at SUNY Fredonia on Friday, Oct. 28. The match is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
