ELMIRA, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team defeated Elmira College, 3-1, Saturday afternoon, capping off a perfect 9-0 record in Empire 8 contests. With the win, Fisher improves to 16-6 overall, and they have won four games straight.
After securing the top seed in the Empire 8 regular season standings last night, the Cardinals have maintained a perfect overall record in regular season conference play since 2018, going 29-0 against division foes.
After opening a 5-3 lead in the first set, Fisher would rattle off eight straight, including four consecutive kills from
Kristen McIntosh,
Kiana Walker, and
Madalyn Bouton. Later in the set, maintaining a 23-9 lead, Fisher would cap the first set with two straight to take set one 25-9.
The offensive prowess continued into the second set as the Cardinals held a 14-4 lead before a timeout from the Soaring Eagles. After scoring four of the next six points out of the timeout, Elmira was not able to hold the Cardinals from closing out the second set with a 9-4 run.
Brandy Morrison finished the afternoon with six kills, four of which would come in set two. The six kills marks a season high for the junior transfer, who has 20 total this season. Ten of those 20 kills have come over this weekend's contests against Alfred and Elmira.
Elmira started strong in the third set, forcing Fisher to take a timeout down 6-2. Out of the timeout, Fisher bounced back and brought the deficit to within two, before forcing Elmira to take a timeout after eventually tying it up, 20-20. After going back-and-forth, to bring the score to 23-23, Fisher was unable to complete the sweep, dropping the set 25-23.
This marks the first set Fisher has dropped in an Empire 8 matchup all season, and the first since an eventual 3-1 win over Nazareth College on Oct. 19, 2021. The Cardinals rebounded in the fourth set, as they would go on a dominating 14-2 run to win set three 25-13, and the game 3-1.
Sydney French would tally seven kills in the win, tying
Lindsey DeBonis for the team lead. Overall, Fisher finished with 36 kills, hitting 0.179. Player of the week to watch
Kiera Hartpence had five of the 12 aces for Fisher.
The Cardinals will return to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 25 with a matchup at SUNY Brockport slated for 7 p.m.
