PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University field hockey team were at home on Wednesday and hosted Elmira College in an Empire 8 contest under the lights. The Cardinals immediately took control of the game and defeated the Soaring Eagles by a final score of 9-0. Fisher moves to 6-9 on the year and 5-2 in conference games, while Elmira fall to 1-12 and 0-7 in E8 play.
The scoring got started quickly for the Cardinals with
Gianna Palma taking on a defender and after an effective spin move, rocketed a ball to the right side of the goal to put the team in front 1-0. Just over two minutes later,
Emma Cooper knocked in a ball that deflected off the goalie to go ahead 2-0. Cooper did not end her scoring though, because in the eighth minute
Taylor Scrocca placed a great ball for Cooper to finish. The first quarter saw one more goal for the Cardinals and it came off the stick of
Audrey Grieb.
The second frame saw three more goals for the Fisher attack.
Morgan Gregory secured the first one, after a pass by
Lily Humphrey left her in front of an open net. Under two minutes later, Palma got on the board again after running over 50 yards with the ball to set up Scrocca whose shot was saved. Palma showed her awareness by following the shot and knocking in her second goal of the night.
Morgan Gregory recorded her second goal of the evening in the 26th minute. In the second half of the game,
Selena Emery and
Sarah Woods added goal no. 8 and 9 off assists by
Maeve Robillard.
The Cardinals will play their last regular season home game on Saturday, Oct. 22 when they celebrate senior day. Fisher will host Russell Sage College at 12 p.m.
