PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University football team is set to be on the road to take on Alfred University this week. The Cardinals enter play with an overall record of 2-4 and 0-2 in Empire 8. The Saxons are coming off a 21-6 win over Hartwick College, as they sit as 2-3 on the year and 1-0 in Empire 8 games.
Last Time Out: In a competitive clash last week, Fisher was unable to tally more than three points, dropping to SUNY Morrisville 10-3. It was a slow start for both teams in their first drives, as they went three and out and punted. The Mustangs then went 45 yards in 13 plays to kick the field goal to go ahead 3-0. Fisher was unable to answer, as they punted after six plays. Later in the second quarter, Morrisville was driving, but after a tackle for loss by
Zach Dreisbach and Trent Sherman,
Deorion Moore broke up a pass to force a 32 yard field goal attempt that was missed. Fisher ended the first half with a 13 play, 62 yards drive that looked to end with a field goal, but the Mustangs blocked it and the Cardinals trailed 3-0 after the first two quarters.
Fisher began the third quarter with the ball and
Malachi Duvall sparked the offense with rushes of 10, 13 and 21 yards to get the ball into Morrisville territory.
Brody Vincenzi then completed passes to
Richie Quinn,
Declan Faery,
Gabe Maloni and
Max Bates to give
Kyle Farewell and 39 yard field goal attempt that he knocked in to even the score. However the Mustangs answered with their next possession by scoring a touchdown to go in front 10-3. The Cardinals had a few chances later in the fourth quarter, but they were unable to convert and even the score.
Scouting Alfred: The Saxons began their season with three straight losses, but they have corrected the ship with back-to-back wins against Kalamazoo College and Hartwick College. As a team, Alfred scores an average of 19.6 points per game, rush for 144.2 yards per game and pass for 165.4 yard per game. Defensively, they allow 32 points per game, 113.8 rushing yard per game and 252.8 passing yards per game.
Last weekend, running back Max Freeman ran the ball 33 times for 119 yards and one touchdown, and as a team the Saxons totaled 48 rushes for 147 yards. In the passing game, Chris Kelly through 10-for-17 for 93 yards and a touchdown, but also tosses three interceptions. Freeman has totaled 136 rushing attempts in five games, for a total of 597 yards.

Defensive Player to Watch: Joe Miscia continues his impressive season, collecting 16 total tackles against Morrisville, including 1.5 tackles for loss. He brings his season total to 69.0 total tackles, 44 assisted and 25 solo.
