PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University field hockey team were at home on Wednesday for an Empire 8 bout against Houghton University, who sit in second place in the Empire 8 conference standings. The Cardinals were able to score three goals and claim the 3-1 victory to hand the Highlanders their first conference loss of the year. Fisher move to 5-8 on the season and 4-2 in conference play, while Houghton hold a 9-4 mark and 4-1 in E8 games.
The defense was strong in the first half for the Cardinals, allowing just one shot to their seven in the first 30 minutes of action. Fisher had three shots in the first quarter, with the first goal coming in the 13th minute off of the stick of
Audrey Grieb after a
Selena Emery attempt went wide. In the second quarter, the Cardinals continued to make attempts at the goal, but none found the back.
Taylor Scrocca saw her attempt go wide, before attempts by
Molly Fisher and Emery were saved by the opposing goalie. Going into the break, Fisher held a 1-0 lead.
The second goal game in the third quarter, when Scrocca found
Sam Choate off of a penalty corner. Choate sent a hard shot to the left side of the goalie and it gave the Cardinals some breathing room. In the fourth quarter, Houghton began to be more aggressive offensively and it led to a goal to cut their deficit to 2-1 with ten minutes to play. However, in the 54th minute, Fisher knocked in her goal after a shot by
Emma Cooper was saved by the goalie, but was not cleared. With the 3-1 lead, Fisher was able to cruise to a victory as the final horn went off.
Fisher will continue their run of home games, as they host SUNY Cortland on Sunday, Oct. 15 at Growney Stadium. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
