PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University field hockey team will take on Houghton University in an Empire 8 Conference game on Oct. 12 at 4 p.m., before taking on SUNY Cortland Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. Both games will be played at home at Growney Stadium.
The Cardinals will look to improve their record from 4-8, including going 3-2 in Empire 8 play. The loss to Washington & Jefferson College marked the first loss to an Empire 8 foe since dropping to Hartwick by a score of 7-2 on Sept. 17. Houghton has an impressive 9-3 record this season, including a 4-0 record in conference play. Cortland is coming off a 5-0 win over Oswego State, improving their overall record to 7-3.
Checking the Standings: Washington & Jefferson earned a key win over the Cardinals on Saturday, bumping Fisher to the fifth seed in the Empire 8 standings. The Championship Tournament will feature the top six teams from regular season play.
Fisher has four critical matchups against Empire 8 teams left this season. They start by playing the current two seed – Houghton (9-3, 4-0 Empire 8), before taking on Elmira College and Russell Sage College on Oct. 19 and Oct. 22, respectively. Both Elmira and Sage are looking for their first win this season. Fisher will wrap up their regular season on Oct. 29 with a game against Utica University (4-6, 3-1) who sits in third place in the conference.
Holding Houghton: In five games against Houghton since 2017, Fisher has allowed only one goal, which came in a 6-1 victory in 2019. Fisher has bested Houghton in nine straight games and has yet to lose to Houghton in conference play.
In last year's contest at Houghton,
Molly Fisher scored the first goal of the game in the 47th minute, on an assist from
Gianna Palma. The Cardinals would go on to win 2-0, behind an impressive 20 shots, nine of which were on goal. Throughout the game, Houghton finished with only one shot that was saved by
Sophia Trozzi.
In the clash of two contending Empire 8 teams, Fisher will look to continue their success against Houghton.
Player to Watch: Sophomore
Emma Cooper has had quite the impressive year. This season Cooper has scored six goals, has six assists, and 18 points; each of which are more than she had last season. In the Oct. 4 win over Oswego, Cooper added seven shots, five of which were on goal.
Cooper will look for her first goal since Sept. 28 against Naz, when she scored twice. The four-game stretch without a goal marks the longest such streak this season for the sophomore.
