PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team were at home on Saturday for an Empire 8 matchup against Elmira College. The two teams were competitive with one another, but it was the Cardinals that were able to secure the 2-0 victory and snap their three-game winless streak. They now hold a record of 3-4-2 and are 2-1 in Empire 8 contests, while the Soaring Eagles move to 6-3-1 and 0-2 in conference play.
Neither team fired a shot in the opening 13 minutes of action, and it was
Parker Hotchkiss and
Jackson Bishop who got the offense started with two shots. The attempts kept coming through the first portion of the first frame, and eventually it was
Matt Gentile who converted a well-placed pass by
Riley Rease for the first goal of the afternoon.
As the second half proceeded, the Cardinals searched for their second goal. Hotchkiss fired two more shots, one of which was on goal, and Fisher had a few corner kick changes as well. In the 59th minute, the additional score hit the back of the net off of the foot of Bishop on an assist by
Stephen Guidi. The Cardinal defense was able to hold on for the win and shut out the opposition thanks to four saves by
Jadon Schlierf.
Fisher continues their run of conference games with a road match at Utica University. The contest is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start on Saturday, Oct. 8.
