ITHACA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team was back in action on Friday as the Cardinals held on for their first win over Ithaca College since 2012 before falling in three sets to the 2019 national champion, No. 6 Johns Hopkins, as part of the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. With the split, Fisher moved to 2-1 on the season.
The Cardinals will face another top-25 opponent at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday as they continue play in Ithaca against No. 12 Juniata.
FISHER 3, ITHACA 2
After holding on for a 33-31 decision in the opening set, Fisher carried its momentum into the second frame and overwhelmed Ithaca to the tune of a 25-12 outcome to stake the visitors to a 2-0 edge.
The Bombers found their footing in the third and fourth sets to draw even, but were unable to hold a late lead in the fifth as Fisher forged ahead to win the match behind a 15-13 score.
Lindsey DeBonis finished with a double-double after the junior slammed home a career-high 17 kills to go along with 10 digs.
Alea Steigerwald added 13 kills and a season-high 21 digs of her own while
Delayne Young added 12 kills and a .250 hitting percentage in the match.
Katie Leaty handed out 41 assists in the win while
Julia Halsey produced a team-high 22 digs overall.
No. 6 JOHNS HOPKINS 3, FISHER 0
The Bluejays picked up where they left off after their unbeaten 2019 campaign and handed Fisher its first loss of the season, 25-20, 25-11, 25-16.
Steigerwald led the way with 10 kills while DeBonis hammered home eight kills on the pins. Halsey was credited with 14 digs while Leaty finished with 19 dimes.
