ITHACA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team fell to 2-2 today despite taking a set from No. 12 Juniata College in the Ithaca Bomber Invitational in Ben Light Gymnasium. With the 3-1 (13-25, 25-23, 19-25, 10-25) loss, the Cardinals saw what will arguably be the best competition of the year, while the Eagles improved their record to 2-1.
After dropping the first set at the hands of the nationally-ranked Eagles, the Cardinals stormed back to take a 25-23 second set to stay alive and force a fourth set. However, Juniata put their foot on the gas and disallowed Fisher from another close chance as the Cardinals were outscored by 21 in the final two frames.
Following a career performance in yesterday's match with Ithaca,
Lindsey DeBonis put up 13 points on 10 kills and three service aces, which she paired with nine digs. All-American
Alea Steigerwald posted her third double-double in two games as the senior drove home ten kills to pair with a team-high 12 digs.
Senior liberoes Juilia Halsey and
Kara Kingsbury combined for 17 digs, while classmate and setter
Katie Leaty had a team-high 19 assists, six digs, two blocks, and a service ace.
The Cardinals get back to work next weekend when they travel up to the North Country Invite for matches with Plattsburgh State and regional rival Clarkson on Friday, September 10th at 6 P.M. and 8 P.M. respectively.
