BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's tennis team got its 2021 season underway on Friday night at the Brockport Tennis Courts as it suffered its first defeat of the year to the host, Brockport Golden Eagles. With the 7-2 loss, the Cardinals begin the year 0-1, while Brockport earned the W in its season opener.
Although Brockport swept all three doubles matches, the Cardinals' second doubles pairing of
Keely Legnard and
Jacqueline Chouinard pushed the opposition to the limit, as they fell short of victory by just one game, 8-7.
Fisher showed a spark of brilliance as
Kathryn Strait returned for her sophomore season at first singles, as she downed her opponent 7-6, 5-3, for the visitor's first point of the day.
That wouldn't be the last point, however, as
Madison Galvin fought tooth and nail for advantage at fourth singles. After dropping the first set, 6-3, she battled back to force a seventh game in the second set, which she won 7-6. In the final showing, the sophomore outlasted her opponent for an exhausting 11-9 victory and Fisher point.
The Cardinals get their Empire 8 competition started in their next match, next Saturday, September 11 when they host Hartwick College for their home opener at Mendon Racquet and Pool Club.
