PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's tennis team suffered its first in-conference match of the season to Empire 8 rival Hartwick College today in their home opener at the Mendon Racquet and Pool Club, 4-5. Fisher fell to 0-2 (0-1) on the year with the loss, while the Hawks bettered their 2021 record to 2-1 (1-0).
Fisher won its first point of the day in second doubles as the team of
Madison Galvin and
Keely Legnard combined for an 8-2 victory over their Hawk opponents, but headed into singles competition with a 1-2 disadvantage.
At first singles,
Kathryn Strait battled back for a big win as the sophomore took the frame, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1, while
Mikayla Santulli and
Keely Legnard downed their opponents in second and third singles, 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-0, respectively. Although
Jacqueline Chouinard made a hard-fought case at fifth singles in a 3-set loss, 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, it all came down to
Madison Galvin, who was forced to retire her fourth singles match due to an injury, inevitably hanging Hartwick the team win.
Fisher looks to bounce back tomorrow afternoon, Sunday September 12, as the Cardinals head up to Oswego State for a 1 P.M. non-conference tilt with the Lakers.
