PITTSFORD, N.Y. – For the second time this season, freshman
Riley Rease scored a pair of goals as the St. John Fisher College men's soccer team claimed a 2-0 win in its Empire 8 debut after defeating visiting Hartwick College on the pitch inside Growney Stadium. With the win, Fisher improved to 2-3-1 on the year and 1-0-0 in the Empire 8 while the hawks dipped to 4-2-2 and 0-1-1, respectively.
After feeling each other out throughout much of the first half, head coach
Jack Burgasser elected to put fresh legs in the game in the 31st minute. The move paid off just four minutes later when
Matt Gentile deflected a turnover at midfield to
Dominic Tabechian who sent a pass through the Hawks' defense to Rease who buried it in the near corner to stake Fisher to a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute after Gentile took a set piece and delivered a perfect ball that Rease headed into the lower corner to make it a 2-0 affair.
Hartwick continued to press on as the game wore on and had two balls bounce off the cross bar, but the Cardinals' back line cleared the ball and preserved the shutout.
Jadon Schlierf played all 90 minutes in goal and earned his first clean sheet of the season after making four saves in all.
Fisher will return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when it hosts the University of Rochester in a non-conference tilt on the pitch inside Growney Stadium.
