Collins Scores First Career Goal as Men's Soccer is Stung By Rochester

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's soccer squad was set back by the nationally-ranked University of Rochester Yellowjackets in a crosstown non-conference contest under the Growney Stadium lights on Tuesday following a 1-4 decision. The Cardinals fell to 2-4-1 on the season while the Yellowjackets remained lossless in 2021, improving to 5-0-3.

UR, who is ranked number 17 in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll, took advantage just two-and-a-half minutes into play as the Cardinals were caught up in their own backfield and a Yellowjackets forward snuck through to steal the ball and a score. Despite an evenly-fought effort in the midfield to garner four corner kicks on the offensive side, the Yellowjackets put themselves on the board twice more before the match's intermission.

The Cardinals defensive line of Cam Webb, Tim Brown, Ryan Brown, and Antonio Buonomo tightened up in the second half, allowing half the number of shots it did in the first period. That effort translated directly into the midfield and front line as Fisher had some of its best opportunities at net come in stretches of the final 45 minutes.

Although Rochester tacked on a final insurance goal in the 76th minute, the hosts turned on the jets in a final effort to escape shutout. With just 23 seconds remaining in regulation, Matt Gentile took the Cardinals' final corner kick of the night. Although it was just a bit too strong, freshman Henry McDonald used his head to put the ball back into the mix, as Ryan Collins came out on top, heading his first career goal between the pipes for Fisher.

Collins and Jackson Bishop led the shot-taking in the contest with two apiece, while the Brown brothers, Buonomo, Justin Bonetto, Troy Jezorio, and Ben Woolingham split the remaining six attempts.

Fisher looks to bounce back next Monday, October 4 when they head to Buffalo for their final non-conference bout of the season when it squares off with Medaille College at 7 P.M.
