UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's tennis team evened its conference record on Saturday after holding on for a 5-4 decision against host Utica College. With the win, Fisher improved to 2-2 on the year and 1-1 in the Empire 8 standings while the Pioneers dipped to 2-2, 1-2, respectively.
After falling in each of the first two singles flights, Fisher earned its first point at third singles when
Keely Legnard pulled out a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Madison Galvin overcame a 7-6 defeat in the first set and rebounded to close out a win at fourth singles, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 while
Jacqueline Chouinard posted a 6-4, 6-4, win at fifth singles.
In doubles play, Fisher claimed a win in the first flight courtesy of an 8-4 score from
Kathryn Strait and
Mikayla Santulli while Legnard and Galvin blanked their competition at second doubles, 8-0, to give Fisher the one-point win.
The Cardinals will look to build upon their momentum at 4 p.m. on Friday when they welcome SUNY Geneseo to the Mendon Racquet and Pool Club.
