PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's tennis team made its debut in Empire 8 play on Friday as the Cardinals fell to Houghton College, 6-3, at Mendon Racquet and Pool Club. With the loss, Fisher slid to 0-2 on the year and 0-1 in the Empire 8 standings while the Highlanders moved to 1-3 overall and 1-0 against conference competition.
The Cardinals fell in the first two doubles flights, but came away with a point at third doubles as the pairing of
Anthony Molosag and
Jon Sutherland won, 8-5.
Trailing 2-1 heading into singles play, Fisher was narrowly defeated at first singles as
Sean Danahy went into the third set before falling, 1-6, 7-6, 3-6.
Jordan O'Connell posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at fourth singles while Molosag was bested in three sets at fifth singles. The Cardinals' final point of the match came at sixth singles as
Andrew Cegielski came out on top, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Fisher will look to capture its first win of the year at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when it heads to Nazareth College for another Empire 8 bout.
