No. 13 Softball Pulling Away in Empire 8 Standings with Wins at Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. – The No. 13 St. John Fisher College softball team started to pull away as the lone leader in the Empire 8 race with its sweep of the Alfred Saxons at Harrington Field on Saturday. The Cardinals improved to 19-2 on the season and 14-1 in the Empire 8 with the wins - three more wins than the second-place Sage Gators - while the Saxons dropped to 20-6 overall and 11-4 in the conference, falling to third place in the standings.

FISHER 2, ALFRED 1

In a battle of two of the top pitchers in the Empire 8 this season, Fisher's Emily Trotman rose to the occasion as the senior held Alfred to just one run on five hits while Allison Rogowski provided all the offense Fisher needed in a one-run win.

Fisher got on the board in the top of the third when Rogowski led off the frame with a solo home run down the left field line.  The Cardinals struck again in the next inning as Abby Flakus lifted a two-out double to center before Rogowski stepped in and laced a single up the gut to plate a run and stake the visitors to a two-run edge.

Alfred got on the board in the home half of the fourth with a run on two hits, but Trotman limited the damage and closed the door on the Saxons as she moved to 10-1 in the circle after going the distance and fanning two.

FISHER 6, ALFRED 0

It was all Fisher in this one as the guests scored one, two, and three runs in the first, second, and third innings. Trotman, Megan Kreger, and Flakus each went 2-for-4 at the plate as Trotman grabbed two RBI on a single that scored two in the top of the second inning. Rogowski continued her big day as the junior singled through the left side in the top of the third inning that scored two runs, while Maddie Klidonas plated the last run on a base hit.

Jess Patterson held off Alfred in her tenth win of the year by allowing just four hits in the seven-inning shutout. The sophomore matched her career-best 11 strikeouts in the appearance for the second straight game.

The Cardinals will look to further their hold on the Empire 8 at 3 p.m. on Tuesday when they travel down East Avenue to take on the Nazareth College Golden Flyers in another conference doubleheader.
