Patterson's K's and Two Solo Shots Give No. 13 Softball the Edge Over Nazareth in DH

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The No. 13 St. John Fisher College softball team extended its Empire 8-leading record to 17-1 on Tuesday evening with two conference wins at East Avenue rival, Nazareth, at Flyer Field. Along with its bettered conference record, Fisher improved to 22-2 on the year, while the Golden Flyers fell to last place in the conference standings at 3-17 overall and 3-15 in the Empire 8.

FISHER 10, NAZARETH 0 (Five Innings)

After Emily Trotman hit her fourth home run in the last eight games to lead off the contest, the Cardinals went on to score another nine runs between the third and fifth innings on 12 hits.

With runners in scoring position in the top of the third, Megan Kreger put the ball in play to score the first runner, while Allie Klonowski followed it up with a base hit, scoring the next. An inning later, Maria Marcera recorded the Cardinals' only other extra-base hit of the game, a double to left field, which scored two runs. The next three Fisher batters grabbed base hits which scored another two for the visitors.

Fisher capped off the scoring in the fifth inning after three Cardinals notched base hits and used stellar baserunning to score the final three runs of the affair.

Klonowski went 3-for3 at the plate with two RBI, while Sammie Torlish, Emma Smith, and Trotman each grabbed two hits and combined for three runs plated. Maddie Klidonas, Kreger, and Marcera also recorded hits in the outing, while Ava Mills and Taylor Malchoff each put their name in the scorebook with an RBI apiece.

Trotman improved to 11-1 in the circle after allowing just two hits in four innings pitched in the shutout. Jenna Leydecker threw a final inning of relief in which she struck out two and allowed a hit in just four batters faced.

FISHER 6, NAZARETH 0

The Cardinals got the bases loaded early in the top of the first inning following two walks and a base hit, in which Rachel Evans was able to plate two runners after forcing Nazareth into a defensive misstep. With two runners still on, Allison Rogowski ripped a two-out double to left center field, scoring the remaining runners and giving the visitors a 4-0 edge.

Five quick innings later, Evans got back to work as she launched a solo shot over the left field wall to extend the lead by a single run. Klidonas ripped a two-out single to right field, before moving into scoring position on an error for Trotman to send her home for Fisher's final run of the day.

The Cardinals' six hits in the contest were split amongst Trotman, Marcera, Evans, Rogowski, Smith, and Klidonas while Evans plated a game-high three runners and Rogowski notched two RBI.

After consecutive appearances of setting and matching her career best strikeout number, the Empire 8 Pitcher of the Week, Jess Patterson, set a new career-best in the category with 12. In her 11th win of the year, the sophomore allowed just three hits and walked two in 26 batters faced in the shutout.

The nationally-ranked Cardinals will close out their out-of-conference schedule tomorrow, April 28 when they travel across town to the University of Rochester to face the Yellowjackets, who are receiving votes in the latest NFCA poll, in a doubleheader beginning at 3 P.M.
