BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball had its six-game winning streak halted on Saturday as the Cardinals suffered their first losses in over three weeks at the hands of The College at Brockport at Clark V. Whited Field. With the setback, Fisher, which is receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com national poll, fell to 12-4 on the season while Brockport improved to 8-2.
BROCKPORT 9, FISHER 5
After a scoreless first inning, Brockport was able to get to Kuruts in the second inning with two runs on two hits, but Fisher would rally in the top of the fourth and tied the game as
Luke Duffy drove in a run with a double before eventually coming around to score on a balk.
With the game knotted up in the bottom of the fourth, Brockport forced Fisher to go to its bullpen after plating seven runs on six hits and a Cardinals' error to open up a 9-2 edge.
Fisher answered with a run in the top of the fifth when
Justin Graham singled and scored
Noah Campanelli who had doubled earlier in the inning.
Trailing 9-3 in the top of the seventh,
Brian Norsen delivered a two-out single before
Adam Zebrowski stepped in and mashed a two-run home run to make it 9-5, but the Golden eagles got the next hitter to ground out to snap Fisher's six-game winning streak.
RJ Kuruts was hit with his first loss of the year to move his season record to 5-1. The Forest City, Pa. native went 3.2 innings and allowed nine runs (six earned) on eight hits. He struck out four before being lifted for
Joseph Tronetti who threw the final 2.1 innings where he allowed just one hit and struck out one.
BROCKPORT 10, FISHER 4
In the nightcap, Fisher struck first in the top of the first when Norsen drove in Campanelli who had led off the game with a double.
Leading 1-0 heading to the bottom of the second, Fisher's hold was short-lived as the Golden Eagles used three hits and a Fisher error to jump ahead, 2-1.
The Cardinals countered in the top of third with Norsen driving in a run, but Brockport had an answer in the home half of the frame with a run of its own to keep Fisher at a one-run deficit.
The home team added to its lead in the fifth inning with a solo home run and tacked on another run in the sixth after a leadoff error came around to score to make it 5-2.
Trailing by three runs in the top of the seventh, Fisher cut the gap to two after Joseph Ruggiero worked a two-out walk and scored when Campanelli connected on a single to make it 5-3 heading to the eighth.
With the heart of its order due up in the top of the eighth, Fisher would get to the back end of the Golden Eagles' pen with Zebrowski slugging his second home run of the day to make it 5-4 before Brockport induced an inning-ending double play to limit the damage.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Golden Eagles nearly batted around and extended their lead to 10-4 after throwing up a five spot.
With just three out left in play and needing a big inning, the Cardinals were unable to generate much momentum after Brockport set the side down in order.
Alec Teska (2-1) started on the mound for Fisher and went 5.0 innings where he allowed four runs on eight hits.
Anthony Brophy threw the final three inning and let in six runs all of which were unearned.
The Cardinals will look to begin a new winning streak at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when they host Ithaca College at Dugan Yard.
