PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's tennis team made its season debut on Saturday and didn't miss a beat as the Cardinals overwhelmed Hartwick College, 8-1, in an Empire 8 match at Mendon Racquet and Pool Club. With the win, Fisher, which is coming off its first-ever Empire 8 Championship in 2019, improved to 1-0 while the Hawks fell to 0-1 following the loss.
The Cardinals earned all three points in doubles play with
Mikayla Santulli and newcomer
Kathryn Strait taking the first flight, 8-3.
Veronika Jurczuk and
Elizabeth Schneider paired up at second doubles for an 8-0 decision while
Amanda Thongsirimonghoun and
Alaina Bartl came out ahead at third doubles following a forfeit.
In singles play, Strait won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, while
Valerie Morgans was a winner at third singles, 6-0, 6-1. Freshman
Maddie Galvin won her collegiate debut in impressive fashion, 6-0, 6-0 while Jurczuk and
Jacqueline Chouinard each won a point for Fisher at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
Fisher will look to continue its winning ways next Saturday when it travels to Utica to face the Pioneers followed by another conference test against Alfred later that day.
