UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's tennis team returned to action on Saturday and outlasted host Utica College, 5-4, in an Empire 8 road match. With the win, Fisher improved to 2-0 on the year and in the conference standings while the Pioneers closed out the afternoon at 1-2.
The Cardinals were able to take two of three points in doubles play with
Valerie Morgans and
Jacqueline Chouinard winning at second doubles, 8-4.
Veronika Jurczuk and
Elizabeth Schneider cruised to an 8-1 decision at third doubles.
In singles, play, Fisher came up big in the fourth, fifth and sixth flights as
Maddie Galvin earned a point at fourth singles behind a 6-2, 6-3 performance. Jurczuk came out ahead at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-2, while Chouinard posted a 6-1, 6-1, win at sixth singles.
The Cardinals are scheduled to return to competition next Saturday when they travel to Houghton to face the Highlanders at 11 a.m. followed by Russell Sage College at 2 p.m.
