UTICA, N.Y. – One day after winning the Empire 8 Regular Season title, the St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team continued to roll on Saturday as Fisher pounded Utica College in a straight-set sweep for its fifth straight win. The Cardinals, who have earned the right to host the four-team tournament in November, moved to 21-4 on the year and 8-0 in the Empire 8 standings while the Pioneers fell to 7-16 overall and 2-6 against league opponents.
After winning the first set, 25-13, Fisher jumped out to a sizable lead in the second en route to a 25-11 win. The Cardinals wrapped up the match in the third frame behind a 25-9 drubbing.
Alea Steigerwald finished with a game-high 15 kills and three aces to go along with four digs while
Gracie Jacob added eight kills in the win.
Sydney French contributed seven kills and two blocks while
Katie Leaty handed out 31 assists overall and was credited with six digs.
Lindsey DeBonis had six kills and 10 digs while
Brooke Segars had two aces.
As a team, Fisher finished with a .429 hitting percentage and accounted for 43 kills and nine aces.
The Cardinals will go for their will go for their 19th win in their last 20 matches at 6 p.m. on Friday when they host Fredonia inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court.
