PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team ran its winning streak to six matches on Friday night after defeating Fredonia State in straight sets in a non-conference tilt inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court. With the win, Fisher improved to 22-4 on the year while the Blue Devils evened their season mark at 12-12.
After cruising to a 25-14 win in the opening set, the Cardinals trailed in the early goings of the second frame after Fredonia surged ahead, 5-1. Down by four, head coach
Kelly Greapentrog's squad hammered home back-to-back kills from
Alea Steigerwald and
Lindsey DeBonis to cut the gap to one.
With momentum beginning to shift, Fisher found a rhythm with DeBonis at the service line and scored six of the next seven points including five unanswered to claim its first lead, 13-10.
As the set wore on, the lead would change hands four more times until the Cardinals used three kills as part of a larger 5-0 burst to hold a four-point cushion, 20-16. The advantage remained in Fisher's hands, but the Blue Devils continued to hang around and eventually pulled even at 24-24 with consecutive aces.
With the set tied, Fredonia went to the line and served into the net before
Kara Kingsbury delivered an ace to give Fisher a 26-24 edge and a two-set cushion.
Fisher carried its hot hitting over into the third frame and promptly built a 21-10 lead courtesy of a 9-1 run. Facing a steep climb, Fredonia tried to answer and cut the deficit to nine, but the lead was too great as
Katie Leaty connected with DeBonis for a kill to complete the sweep.
DeBonis led the way for Fisher at the net with 12 kills and a .345 hitting percentage to go along with 10 digs. The junior also served up four aces in the win. Steigerwald finished with 11 kills and 12 digs while
Sydney French had five kills. Leaty handed out 28 assists while Julia Halset chipped in with eight digs over three sets.
The Cardinals will wrap up their regular season slate beginning with an 11 a.m. showdown with the University of Rochester on Saturday morning inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium. The team will also honor its senior class at 3 p.m. prior to their pairing with the Buffalo State.
