PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team capped off its regular season with a pair of wins on Saturday on Bobby Wanzer Court after the Cardinals defeated both the University of Rochester and Buffalo State in straight sets. With the wins, Fisher, which pushed its winning streak to eight overall, improved to 24-4 on the season, which marks its most victories in a single season since 1998.
The wins had added meaning as the team celebrated and honored its five seniors including
Alyssa Beyer,
Julia Halsey,
Alea Steigerwald,
Katie Leaty and
Kara Kingsbury prior to the opening whistle.
FISHER 3, ROCHESTER 0
After taking the first two sets easily, 25-15, 25-12, the Cardinals were unable to put away the Yellowjackets quickly in the third frame.
Head coach
Kelly Greapentrog's struggled to get much going offensively as the Yellowjackets used a 7-1 burst to eventually build a 22-9 lead. With Fisher on the ropes, Rochester was unable to close the door as a kill by
Delayne Young brought
Brooke Segars to the service line. Trailing by 11, Fisher caught fire and hammered home five kills while Segars accounted for six aces as part of a 16-0 run that lifted the Cardinals to a 25-22 win.
Steigerwald finished with 10 kills and nine digs in the sweep while Young finished with 10 kills and four digs.
Lindsey DeBonis added six kills and 12 digs in the win while
Sydney French had five kills in three sets. Kingsbury had 12 digs and two aces overall while Halsey produced 14 digs in total. Leaty notched her 1,000th career assist in the win after handing out 28 helpers.
FISHER 3, BUFFALO STATE 0
The Cardinals carried over their momentum into the nightcap as Fisher defeated the Bengals in the opening set, 25-22, behind a .225 hitting percentage. The home team continued to chug along in the second set after wearing the visitors down in a 25-17 decision to set up a third and deciding frame.
In the third, both teams traded the lead with the advantage changing sides seven times until the Bengals pulled ahead 18-17. With the tides beginning to shift, Fisher buckled down and rattled off eight straight points to complete the sweep, 25-18.
Steigerwald finished with 12 kills and 11 digs while
Gracie Jacob added 10 kills and five digs. Leaty notched 31 assists overall while DeBonis chipped in with seven kills and 10 digs.
The Cardinals will now prep for the Empire 8 Championship which they're set to host beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday when top-seeded Fisher hosts the winner of Elmira College and Keuka College in the semifinal round inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium.
