HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's tennis team saw its run to another conference title ended on Friday afternoon as the third-seeded Cardinals fell to the second-seeded Hartwick College Hawks, 5-1, in the semifinal round of the Empire 8 Championship. Following the defeat, Fisher slipped to 5-5 on the year while the Hawks improved to 9-2 overall and advanced to Saturday's finale to take on top-seeded Nazareth College for the league's crown.
The Cardinals fell in each of the first two doubles flights before
Jacqueline Chouinard and
Riley Ellis paired up for an 8-6 win at third doubles to cut the Hartwick lead in half heading into individual play.
In singles play, Fisher was forced to retire at first singles and was defeated in fifth singles and third singles to clinch the win for Hartwick.
The Cardinals will return to action in March when they travel to Hilton Head, S.C. for their annual spring break trip.
