AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The No. 14 St. John Fisher College baseball team was set back on Friday following two losses to John Carroll University in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. The Cardinals fell to 6-4 on the 2020 season while the Blue Streaks improved to 7-3 overall.
JCU 4, FISHER 3
After trading zeroes for the first three innings,
Adam Zebrowski's first home run of the season (second career) put two runs across the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning to get the scoring started and put Fisher ahead, 2-0.
Through the first five frames, the Cardinals held the Blue Streaks scoreless as
Anthony Brophy held the JCU offense to just four hits. JCU put their first run on the board in the sixth inning following two defensive mistakes that allowed a base hit to score the runner.
Allen Murphy took a trip around the bases in the bottom of the sixth following a combination of the Fisher offense and defensive mistakes, which extended the Cardinals' lead to 2, 3-1.
John Carroll came out blazing in the seventh as the Blue Streaks scored three straight runs behind a double and a two-RBI home run, which gave them a one run advantage headed into the bottom of the seventh.
A
Noah Campanelli leadoff double was not enough for Fisher as he was stranded on the base path and the first half of the day's doubleheader went to JCU.
Murphy,
Thomas Pasquale, Zebrowski, Campanelli, and
Michael Beimel each tallied one of the Cardinals' five hits in the contest.
Anthony Brophy pitched the full 7.0 innings, allowed eight hits, struck out four batters and walked one – his record fell to 1-1.
JCU 2, FISHER 1
The top of the third inning brought about the first scoring opportunity for the Cardinals in the nightcap. After
Stephen Edgett drew a leadoff walk,
Justin Graham bunt singled to advance his teammate to third, which gave Murphy a chance to send Edgett across home plate for a RBI sac fly, to give Fisher a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals held the lead until the bottom of the sixth inning after a JCU runner scored on a wild pitch to tie the game up at one run apiece. An inning later, Fisher gave up the lead on a Blue Streaks solo shot to right field. The JCU one run lead was one which the Cardinals could not overcome in the next two innings.
Graham, Pasquale,
Brian Norsen, and
Antony Mantova each recorded a single hit in the contest for the Cardinal and Gold.
Fisher's pitching staff struck out nine batters and allowed just four hits in the matchup, but the Cardinals' seemingly small mistakes were too costly.
Baseball looks to get back on track tomorrow when they meet with John Carroll for a third time at 9:30 A.M. for the Cardinals' last spring break game at the RussMatt Invitational.
