AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College baseball team's power was on full display on Thursday afternoon as the Cardinals hung 19 runs on 21 hits in a 19-12 win over Saint Vincent's in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. With the win, Fisher, which is ranked 14th in the latest D3baseball.com poll, improved to 6-2 while the Bearcats fell to 2-3 with the loss.
Freshman
Brian Norsen had a career afternoon after the Hamburg native went 4-for-6 at the plate with two home runs, a double, seven RBI and four runs scored while
Antony Mantova had four hits in six at-bats with three RBI of his own.
Allen Murphy and
Adam Zebrowski had three hits in the win with the latter banging a triple.
Justin Graham had two hits while
Stephen Edgett was 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI.
Noah Campanelli hit a pinch-hit home run and two RBI.
After giving up four runs over the first three innings, Fisher's offense came to life as the Cardinals plated eight runs on seven hits including two three-run shots from Norsen and Edgett to open up a five-run cushion heading to the top of the fourth.
The Bearcats would get three back in the top of the inning, but were unable to get off the field in the home half of the frame as Fisher scored four more runs on four hits to make it 12-7.
After a two-run single by Mantova in the fifth staked the Cardinals to a 14-7 advantage, Saint Vincent's strung together another big inning with four runs to pull to within three and would score another run in the top of the seventh to make it a two-score affair, 14-12.
Leading by two, Fisher broke it open in the bottom of the seventh with two more runs before tacking on three more runs in the eighth when Norsen crushed his second three-run shot of the game to make it 19-12.
Cole Hedden started for Fisher and lasted 2.1 innings after giving up four runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
Logan Persse recorded two outs and gave up three runs before being lifted for
Joseph Tronetti who earned the win in relief. Tronetti threw two innings and was tagged for three runs in all.
Dillan Wilkinson went two thirds of an inning and allowed one run on two hits.
Connor McHugh tossed an inning and
Tim Geissel shut down the Bearcats for 1.1 innings.
Brandon Roberts finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Cardinals continue their play in Florida at 3 p.m. on Friday when they take on John Carroll in a doubleheader at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.
