Women's Soccer Claims 1-0 Win at Babson; Romano Nets First Career Coaching Win

BABSON PARK, MASS. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team started the 2019 season victorious after defeating the Babson College Beavers 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field. With the win, the Cardinals, who earned their first season-opening victory since 2015, moved to 1-0-0 on the season while the Beavers fell to 0-1-0.  The win also marked the first-carer coaching victory for Molly Romano.
 
Both squads used their freshness wisely as neither team gained a scoring advantage in the first half. The two teams traded shots throughout the first 45 minutes, as the Cardinals outshot the Beavers by four.
 
Junior goalkeeper, Lila Platt made two saves in the first half to keep Babson scoreless.
 
Fisher's offensive tempo ramped up in the second half as the Cardinals gained their first of three corner kicks in the 47th minute. Three short minutes later, Carli Kovarik broke past a Babson defender and found the toe of an open Megan Letta who netted her first career goal and the Cardinals' first goal of the season.
 
Kovarik led all players in shot attempts including four total and two on goal. Letta, Logan Chase, Kierra Duvall, Jessica Aldred, and Abigail Barr also added one shot on goal each.
 
Babson's offense was rejuvenated in the second half, but was unable to solve the Cardinals' excellent line of defense and outstanding play from Platt. Overall, the junior made five more saves including an incredible diving punch save to keep the Beavers scoreless over the final 45 minutes of play.
 
In her first career start, Platt recorded her first collegiate win and a shutout to match.
 
The Fisher bench proved to be an invaluable asset as 22 players saw the field.
 
The Cardinals return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4 when they travel to The College at Brockport for a non-conference matchup with the Golden Eagles.
