PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's tennis team earned its first win of the season in convincing fashion as the Cardinals swept Utica College, 9-0, in the team's conference debut at Mendon Racquet and Pool Club. With the win, Fisher closed out the day at 1-7 overall and 1-0 in the Empire 8 while the Pioneers fell to 0-2, 0-1, respectively.
Fisher made quick work of Utica in singles competition with
John Miller winning at first singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Dustin McCullough took second singles, 6-1, 6-0 while
Jonathan Harper and
Jarrett Pelton did not give up a set in identical 6-0, 6-0 wins at third and fourth singles.
In fifth singles,
Tim Christman finished off his opponent, 6-0, 6-2 and
Michael Zintel posted a straight-set win of his own at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, McCullough and Harper came out on top 8-0 at first doubles while Miller and Pelton took the second doubles flight, 8-1. In third doubles, Christman and
Jordan O'Connell posted an 8-2 win to complete the sweep.
The Cardinals will look to keep their momentum going at 10 a.m. next Saturday when they travel to Hoboken, N.J. to take on Stevens Institute of Technology in an Empire 8 pairing.
