ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The No. 16 St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team won its sixth consecutive game on Wednesday night as the Cardinals defeated Nazareth College by a score of 9-5. With the victory Fisher improves to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Empire 8, while the Golden Flyers fall to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Logan Chase got the goal scoring started in the game as the junior tallied her 10
th of the season just under three minutes after the opening whistle. Teammate
Allison Rupp followed suit as she found the back of the net on the man-up advantage off of a pass from
Mallory Eymer to push the lead to two goals.
Following a Nazareth answering goal,
Mary Grace Doyle and
Mallory Eymer scored back-to-back goals for Fisher as the lead was increased to 4-1 with seven minutes remaining until halftime. However, despite out-shooting the Golden Flyers 15-4 in the opening half, the Cardinals were held scoreless for the remaining seven minutes as the teams headed into the halftime
break.
As the second half got underway, it was Nazareth taking the early momentum as the Golden Flyers opened the half with two consecutive goals within the first three minutes of play.
From there, it was all Fisher for the next 25 minutes of game time as the Cardinals rattled off four straight goals to increase their advantage to 8-3. Goal scorers included Chase, Doyle,
Molly Tice, and
Alyssa Sproule.
From there, Nazareth would be able to find the back of the net twice more, while
Sydney DeGirolamo scored the game's final goal as Fisher would earn its first Empire 8 win of the 2018 season.
Claudia Mocciaro was credited with the victory in goal for Fisher as the sophomore finished the first half with three saves. Senior
Morgan Hayes saw the second half action between the pipes and finished with two saves overall.
Hayley Maguire led the way for the Fisher defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls to help hold Nazareth to only five goals on the day. As a team, the Cardinals converted 18-of-20 clear attempts, while grabbing 11 draw controls.
Fisher returns to the field on Saturday at 12 p.m. when it welcomes Houghton to Growney Stadium for its second Empire 8 Conference matchup of the season.
