No. 16 Women's Lacrosse Takes Care Of Business Against Houghton In Empire 8 Action

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 16 St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team scored a season-high 22 goals on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals won their seventh consecutive game, defeating Houghton College 22-0. With the victory, Fisher improves to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the Empire 8, while the Highlanders fall to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Prior to the game, the women's lacrosse team celebrated its Sister Day as the team welcomed individuals from St. Joseph's School in Penfield and Holy Childhood onto the field for pre-game. As a team, Fisher out-shot Houghton 39-3 throughout the game, while also grabbing 20 of the game's 23 total draw controls.

As the first half got underway, the Fisher offense got the goal scoring started early and often as the Cardinals found the back of the net eight times within the first 10 minutes of play. The early goal scorers for Linda Michele's team included Mary Grace Doyle, Sydney DeGirolamo, Allison Rupp, Mallory Eymer, Emily Thompson, and Brittany Halpin.

As the first half of action wore, the Cardinal offense continued to its scoring touch as Fisher tallied nine more goals before the halftime break. New goal scorers included Bianca Giacona, Olivia Marziale, Sara Roman, Emily Smith, Maria Hristodoulou, and Kathleen Salanger. With the 17 goals scored in the first half, the Cardinals assisted on 13 of them as both sides headed into the halftime break.

The Fisher defense continued to hold strong as the second half of play got underway, as Alyssa Sobotka was the first Cardinal to find the back of the net at the 26:18 mark.

From there, Fisher was held to four goals for the remainder of the second half as Logan Chase, Brenna Wilson, and Roman wrapped up the goal scoring in the game.

Giacona led the way for Fisher with one goal and four assists in the game, while Marziale, Doyle, Thompson, Roman and Rupp all finished with three points apiece.

Defensively, Hayley Maguire and Chase led the Cardinals with two caused turnovers, while Salanger grabbed a team-high three ground balls.

Claudia Mocciaro was credited with her seventh victory of the season after seeing the first half of action in net, while Morgan Hayes was between the pipes for the second half and finished with two saves.

Fisher returns to action on Thursday at 4 p.m. when it travels to No. 15 SUNY Cortland for a non-conference battle with the Red Dragons.
