No. 18 Women's Lacrosse Takes Down Rochester In 2019 Season Opener

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 18 St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team kicked off its 2019 campaign with a 13-3 victory over The University of Rochester inside Growney Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 1-0 overall on the season, while the Yellowjackets fall to 0-1 overall.

It didn't take long for Fisher to score its first goal of the season as was Olivia Marziale was able to find the back of the net, just 18 seconds into the first game.

Following a Rochester goal to tie the game up at one apiece, Alyssa Sproule and Mallory Eymer put the Cardinals up by two goals with only eight minutes coming off of the clock in the opening half.

The Yellowjackets were able to cut the Fisher lead to one at the 20:33 mark, however it was all Fisher for the remainder of the first half as the Cardinals scored six-unanswered goals to close out the half.

Eymer and Sproule both tallied their second goals of the first half, while the remaining goal scorers for Fisher included Sydney DeGirolamo, Mary Grace Doyle, Allison Rupp, and Logan Chase.

Fisher out-shot Rochester 13-4 in the first half, while also leading in the draw control category with a 10-2 margin.

Rupp opened up the second half scoring as the junior scored her second of the game, five minutes after the halftime break. Rochester quickly answered as the Yellowjackets were able to beat goalkeeper Morgan Hayes at the 22:42 mark, cutting the Cardinals' lead to 10-3.

As the second half of action wore on, both teams battled back-and-forth until Mallory Eymer finished off her hat-trick at the 9:17 mark. From there, Emily Thompson and Brittany Halpin scored the final two goals for the Cardinals on their way to their first victory of the 2019 season.

As a team, Fisher notched 23 shots on goal while also finishing with 18-of-21 in clear attempts. The Fisher defense held tough throughout and caused 23 turnovers in all. Claudia Mocciaro got the start between the pipes and was credited with the victory after seeing the first 37 minutes of action and finishing with two saves. Fellow goalkeeper Morgan Hayes saw 23 minutes of game-time and finished with six total saves.

The Cardinals return to action Tuesday, March 5th at 10 a.m. when they travel to Clearwater, Fla. to take on No. 6 York College of Pennsylvania as part of their Spring Break trip.
