Men's Soccer Extends Unbeaten Streak To Five Games With Tie At Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team traveled down to Elmira College for an Empire 8 conference contest at the Soaring Eagles' Campus Field on Saturday. Fisher and Elmira played to a 1-1 draw after two overtimes of play.

Sophomore Justin Bonetto scored the lone tally for the Cardinals. Senior Justin Miles spent all 110 minutes in between the pipes while making three saves for Fisher. The Cardinals, who extended their unbeaten streak to five games, move to 3-8-3 overall and 1-1-3 in conference play. The Soaring Eagles record is now 9-4-3 and 2-1-2 in E8 action. Fisher currently stands in the fourth and final playoff spot with one game remaining.

The Cardinals had an early chance in the 13th minute when Bonetto sent a shot from 25 yards out that hit the crossbar. A few minutes later, Elmira would get on the scoreboard to make it 1-0.

Fisher would look to tie the game later in the half with pair of shots that came from Bonetto and sophomore Brian Netto. Both were stopped by the Soaring Eagles to keep it a one-goal game heading into halftime.

Just over 13 minutes into the second half, Bonetto found a loose ball from 18 yards and sent it into the lower right corner of the net to tie things at one-all. Fisher looked to have the momentum with a couple of scoring chances down the stretch but they were unable to bury them and the game went into the extra frame.

In the first overtime, the Cardinals out shot the Soaring Eagles, 3-1, with freshman Ben Conrow sending one on net. In the second overtime, neither team registered a shot on net as the game ended after 110 minutes of play.

Fisher was out shot 18-13, but had five shots on goal compared to Elmira's four. Bonetto had a team-high four shots. With two points today, the sophomore hit a career-high seven points this season.

The Cardinals have a week to prepare for their final match of the regular season. They welcome Alfred University at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 2nd. Fisher will honor its senior class at the game. With a victory, it secures a postseason berth.
