PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team dropped a season-ending heartbreaker to Alfred University on senior night at Growney Stadium, 0-1. The Cardinals finished the 2019 season with a 3-9-3 overall record and a 1-2-3 record in the Empire 8. With the win, the Saxons clinched a berth in the conference tournament and improved to 7-11 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Alfred held possession of the game's momentum for the majority of the first 45 minutes as the Saxons doubled the Cardinals' scoring opportunities, 6-3. Fisher's best chance to score came in the 40
th minute when
Brennan Brown beat the keeper in open field, but a Saxon defender came sliding in front of Brown's rocket to keep the Cardinals off the board.
The second half saw more offensive activity on both ends of the field as the two teams totaled 15 shots, with the Cardinals taking one less than its opponent. The teams battled back and forth for the second half with overtime looming on the horizon.
With no score and only one minute remaining on the clock, the Cardinals were called for a handball which set a free position for their opponent right in the teeth of the Fisher defense. Alfred took advantage of the set piece and sent a ball gliding over the fingertips of Fisher keeper,
Justin Miles.
The Cardinals tallied 10 shots on the night, five of which were on target.
Joe Balls and
Justin Bonetto each took two shots for Fisher while Brown,
Brian Netto,
Ben Woolingham,
Antonio Robles,
Colin Witman, and
Jeff Meyers took one apiece.
Miles logged all 90 minutes between the pipes and made 6 stops on the night as he finished the season at 2-2-3 with a .838 save percentage.
After taking over in September, interim head coach
Justin Ferron led the Cardinals to a 3-3-3 record.
