Keuka Park, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team earned its first victory of the 2018 season on Wednesday evening, as the Cardinals defeated the Wolves of Keuka College in straight sets 25-18, 25-22, 27-25. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 1-4 overall on the season, while the Wolves fall to 0-5 overall.
The Cardinal offense came out strong in the opening set, posting 12 kills on only 28 total attempts. Fisher used two separate five-point runs throughout the first set, to help create some momentum for the remainder of the match. Setter
Rebecca Hay was able to spread the wealth in the first set, as
Alea Steigerwald notched three kills, while
Izzy Smith and
Emily Risch each added two apiece.
Much like the first set, the Fisher offense matched its 12 kills from the opening set, this time with only five errors. As a team, the Cardinals closed the second set with a game-high .194 hitting percentage. Smith helped the Cardinals to another four-point run in the second set, with two consecutive serving aces.
Both teams fought hard in the third set, as both sides traded points back and forth for the majority of the third set. With the set tied at 25 apiece, the Cardinals serving proved to be the difference maker, as Steigerwald finished off the Wolves with two consecutive service aces to take the match in straight sets.

The Cardinals are back in action on Friday, when they travel across town to the University of Rochester to take on SUNY Poly at 5 p.m.
