ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team recorded 38 kills including 23 between
Alea Steigerwald and
Izzy Smith as the Cardinals dropped SUNY Poly in straight sets, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 for the team's second straight win. With the sweep, Fisher improved to 2-4 on the season while SUNY Poly fell to 1-4 overall.
Steigerwald continued to showcase her power with a team-high 12 kills to go along with 14 digs. Smith followed with 11 kills of her own and six digs and two block assists while setter
Rebecca Hay totaled 28 assists and three aces from the service line.
Julia Halsey chipped in with eight kills and
Elise Kreuz added 18 digs in the win.
Fisher jumped out to an early lead in the opening set behind a 5-1 run highlighted by kills from Smith and Steigerwald. From there, the Cardinals would see their lead evaporate as the Wildcats used an 8-1 run to open up a 15-12 advantage.
The momentum quickly shifted back to Fisher, however, as the home team strung together five unanswered points with Steigerwald, Hay, Kreuz and Halsey each being credited with a kill before SUNY Poly rebounded and reclaimed the lead, 20-17. Trailing by three, the Cardinals bounced back and scored eight of the set's final 11 points to take a 1-0 edge into the second frame.
Head coach
Kelly Greapentrog's troops carried the momentum into the second set as the Cardinals built an 8-2 lead early on. As was the case in the first set, SUNY Poly held firm and battled back to open up a slight lead, 10-9, but Fisher proved to be too much down the stretch after five straight points afforded the Cardinals a lead, which they never relinquished.
Heading into the third set with a 2-0 edge, Fisher found itself in a six-point hole after the Wildcats stormed to a 10-4 lead. As the set wore on, Fisher chipped away and pulled to within five, 16-11, before orchestrating a 12-3 run highlighted by two kills apiece from Steigerwald and Halsey to make it 23-19. SUNY Poly would keep it close with two quick points, but back-to-back kills by
Erica Pawlewicz and Steigerwald sealed the deal and ended the match.
Fisher will look to extend its modest winning streak beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they Cardinals face-off with Wells College at the University of Rochester before battling the host Yellowjackets at 3 p.m.
