TUCSON, ARIZONA – The St. John Fisher College softball team split on the first day of the Tucson Invitational hosted at Lincoln Sports Complex. The Cardinals dropped a close battle with Wittenberg University 4-3, before thumping SUNY Oneonta in a regional matchup, 12-1.

Wittenberg 4, Fisher 3

After Emily Trotman and the Cardinals held the Tigers scoreless in the top of the first inning, Fisher would strike first in the bottom half of the inning. Katie Mazierski would lead off the inning with a base on balls before stealing second base. Eventually Sammie Torlish would loft a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Mazierski.

The Tigers would come out in the top half of the third inning scoring two runs on four hits.

We would not see any more runs until the fifth inning where Wittenberg would plate another two runs on three base knocks.

Fisher would come into the bottom of the sixth inning and chip away at the Tiger's lead, cutting the deficit to one. Torlish would lead off the inning with a single to left field. Sarah Kubik would then reach on a fielder's choice before Trotman would send a bullet up the middle to score Torlish. Kubik would score later in the inning after a Wittenberg error.

The Cardinals would hold off the Tigers and start up the bottom of the seventh with a Mazierski single. Fisher would try to force a rally but would come up just short.

Trotman would suffer the loss in the circle and move to 1-1 on the year.

Trotman would make up for it at the plate going a perfect 3-3 with a double and an RBI. Kubik, Torlish and Mazierski would finish with one hit apiece. Mazierski would also swipe three total bases in the affair.

Fisher 12, Oneonta 1

Fisher bounced right back in the second game of the day, scoring six of its 12 runs in the top of the first inning. Mazierski would led off the inning with a bunt single, followed by a Julia Sortisio single to right field, setting up Torlish for the big time two RBI triple over the center fielder's head. Then, Kubik would step up to the plate and launch a bomb over left field fence, putting the Cardinals up four. Emma Savas would leg out a single to the shortstop before Alexa Montemayor would do the same to first baseman. Savas would eventually score on a wild pitch and Mazierski would ground out, but force Montemayor across the plate for the final run of the inning.

Lindsey Thayer would take the mound and strike out two of three before the Cardinals would head back to the bats.

After a Torlish single and two walks from Kubik and Trotman, Megan Kreger would launch a double into left center, tacking on another run for the Cardinals.

Fisher would pile on five more runs behind the big bat of Marissa Kirker in the top of the third. Sam Schermerhorn would start it off by chipping a single into left field. Mazierski woud follow it up with a single of her own and Sortisio would find her way on with a walk. Torlish would send another sacrifice fly to left field before Kirker would step up to the plate. Kirker would then send a line drive, grand slam over the left center field fence for her first collegiate homerun.

That would do it for the Cardinals with Allison Uberty coming in and closing it out in the final two innings, ending the game in five innings.

Lindsey Thayer would get her second win of the year in the circle, striking out six in total.

Mazierski, Torlish, Kirker and Schermerhorn would all finish with two base knocks on the day for the Cardinals.

Fisher returns to the diamond 1:30 MST (3:30 EST) on Wednesday taking on Husson University before squaring off against the College of Staten Island at 3:30 MST (5:30 EST) in Tucson.
