Colorado Springs, Colorado – The number 16
th ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team opened its 2018 season with a 17-9 victory over Colorado College on Monday afternoon. The Cardinals improved to 1-0 on the young season while the Tigers fell to 2-2 overall.
Senior
Kelsie Schindler and junior
Mary Grace Doyle both started off their seasons strong, both notching hat-tricks in the win. The Cardinals came out firing in the first half as Schindler and Doyle both scored within the first three and a half minutes. Colorado College was able to fight their way back quickly to tie the game back up at two apiece.
From there, Fisher was able to storm ahead going on a 9-3 scoring run to end the half and take an 11-5 lead into the locker room. Along with Schindler and Doyle scoring another goal apiece, scorers included
Olivia Marziale,
Maria Hristodoulou,
Claire Bollin,
Mackenzie LeVan, and two from
Logan Chase.
Morgan Young tallied her first of the season just 36 second into the second half, with Bollin picking up her second assists of the day. Colorado College was able to put another goal on the scoreboard, however the Cardinals were able to retain the momentum and score four straight goals from
Mallory Eymer, LeVan, Hristodoulou, and Schindler. Doyle added her third of the game at the 28:20 minute mark to complete her hat-trick.
The Cardinals out-shot the Tigers 36-27 in the game and controlled the ground ball game 21 to 17. Goalkeeper
Molly Maguire took home the victory as the senior tallied eight saves and played all 60 minutes in the win.
Aside from her three goals, Schindler notched three assists, Bollin pitched in three as well, while Doyle,
Jenna Lippert, and
Allison Rupp added one apiece.
The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they take on Montclair State University at 4 p.m. in the final game of their Spring Break Trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado.
