UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team fell on Wednesday night in an Empire 8 bout at Utica College by a score of 1-0 at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium despite outshooting its host. With the loss, Fisher slipped to 6-6-3 on the season and 2-3-2 in the Empire 8 standings while the Pioneers improved to 10-5-2 overall and 5-1-1 against conference opponents.
The game's lone goal came in the 24th minute when the Pioneers sent a ball inside the box that found its way into the back of the Cardinals' net to make it a one-goal affair.
Trailing by a goal in the second half, Fisher began to turn up the intensity as the Cardinals fired four shots on goal, but all four were turned aside by the Pioneers' goalie to keep the visitors at a one goal disadvantage.
In all, Fisher accounted for seven shots – four more than Utica.
Tara Marcello led the way with two shots to her credit while
Carli Kovarik,
Makenzie Winslow,
Isabelle DeStefano and
Mia Tirabassi each contributed one shot overall.
In goal,
Melissa McGowan was saddled with the loss after allowing one goal in 29 minutes of play.
Kayla Shutts played nearly 61 minutes and did not face a shot.
Fisher will close out its regular season at 1 p.m. on Saturday when the team hosts Elmira College in an Empire 8 pairing. The game will have added significance as it coincides with Senior Day.
