Women's Soccer Guts Out Draw with Nazareth in Empire 8 Action

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team grinded out a crucial Empire 8 matchup with Nazareth College and ended the game tied at zero. The Cardinals moved to 6-4-3 overall and sit at 2-1-2 in the conference. The Golden Flyers stand at 6-5-4 overall and 2-2-3 in the Empire 8.

The first 45 minutes of the contest was an even battle between the East Avenue rivals with both teams ripping four shots apiece. Fisher put three of those shots on net with Carli Kovarik, Logan Chase, Makenzie Winslow and Abigail Barr each tallying a shot in the first half.

Senior goalkeeper Melissa McGowan and the Cardinal defense kept Fisher knotted at zero at the completion of the half after they only allowed a single shot on goal.

Not much changed in the second half of play as the two teams traded shots back and forth for a majority of regulation play.

The Cardinals best chance to score came in the 74th minute as Isabelle DeStefano booted an open shot just high of the net.

Kovarik added two shots in the second 45 minutes of play while DeStefano and Shiane Irwin each added one apiece.

At the end of regulation, the Golden Flyers had the 13-9 edge on Fisher in shots, but the teams would stay squared away at zero, forcing the overtime period.

DeStefano registered the lone shot of the first ten minute overtime period, however the two teams kept the scoreboard clean and forced the second overtime period.

Irwin and Elise Olivo notched the two shots of the second overtime, but eventually the two teams finished out the affair tied at zero.

Kovarik wrapped up the game with a team-high three shots, while Irwin and DeStefano recorded two.

McGowan gutted out all 110 minutes in net and tallied six saves in the nightcap.

Fisher returns to action at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 20th as the team is slated to travel to Alfred University to take on the Saxons.
