BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Four goals over the first 25 minutes of play was more than enough to assure the St. John Fisher College field hockey team its third straight win as the Cardinals defeated The College at Brockport, 5-1, on Wednesday night at the Dr. Linda Arena and Class of 1969 Field Hockey Venue. With the win, Fisher improved to 11-4 overall while the Golden Eagles fell to 4-11 with the loss.
Fisher got the night started in just the 10th minute when sophomore
Bre Socker unloaded a blast into the back of the Golden Eagles' net to stake the visitors to a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals would double their lead just two minute later when Socker paired up with
Gianna Palma for a one-timer to make it a two-goal contest.
As the first half wore on, Fisher padded its advantage in the 20th minute as
Lauren Fazio, the reigning Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week, sent a pass through the middle that found Socker on the far post to give head coach
Victoria Bothner's team a 3-0 edge. The Cardinals dropped their fourth score of the half in the 25th minute with Fazio poking home a loose ball on Brockport's goal line for her conference-leading 16th goal of the season.
Leading by four goals late in the second half, Fisher gave one back in the 55th minute, but countered with a goal of its own in the 67th as Socker notched her second hat trick of the season with Fazio collecting another assist on the play.
Ashley Maynard continued her strong play in goal as the senior made two saves and allowed just one goal over 70 minutes of action.
The Cardinals enjoyed a significant shot advantage in the win and out-shot their host, 25-5 overall. Socker led the charge with nine shots including seven on goal while Fazio and Palma each had four shots in all.
Fisher will be back in action at 11 a.m. on Saturday when it hosts Stevens Institute of Technology in a pivotal Empire 8 pairing at Growney Stadium. The game will have added significance as it marks the final regular season home game and senior day.
