Men's Soccer Knocks Off Houghton in Empire 8 Conference Nightcap

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team took down the Highlanders of Houghton College in Empire 8 conference action on the turf of Growney Stadium, 2-1. With the win, Fisher jumped to 3-9-2 overall and advanced to 3-2 in the conference standings. Houghton dropped to 4-9-0 on the year and fell to 1-4 in the Empire 8 with the loss.

The Cardinals opened up the scoring in just the seventh minute of play as freshman Justin Bonetto netted his second goal of the season after he ripped the ball into the back of the net off a goalkeeper deflection to put Fisher up a score.

Solid defensive play from Shea Lynch, Dallas Kaiser and Glenn Roschetzky held off a threatening Houghton offense.

Fisher would find itself up two goals in the 23rd minute after Brennan Brown sent a corner kick sailing, eventually finding the head of freshman Matt Maggy who went on to net his first collegiate goal.

The Cardinals totaled nine shots in the first half with Roschetzky, Bonetto and Joe Balls with two shots apiece.

Fisher and Houghton went shot for shot in the second half of play. The Highlanders snuck a goal in past Justin Miles just before the 63rd minute, but the Cardinals prevailed to take the conference victory.

The Cardinals wrapped up the night with 14 total shots in the affair. Bonetto and Balls led the squad with four shots apiece while Roschetzky finished with three of his own.

Sophomore Miles put on a stellar performance for the Cardinals in net as he picked up his third win of the season and tallied a career-high eight saves.

Fisher take a short break, but return to action at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 20th against the Elmira College Soaring Eagles on the Cardinals' senior night celebration.
