HIRAM, OHIO – The St. John Fisher College men's volleyball team stepped on the court in its first game of the Hiram Invitational Tournament Friday, dropping its match to Wittenberg College, three sets to none. With the loss Fisher falls to 3-2 overall on the year while Wittenberg moved to a 2-4 record with the win.
After falling behind 10-6 in the first set, Fisher rallied back and cut the deficit to two. After trading points back and forth, the Cardinals dropped the first set, 25-19.
In the second set, the Cardinals fought their way up, and jumped ahead of the Tigers, 20-17 mid-way through the second set. However, Wittenberg would rally back, squaring the set at 20. After Wittenberg jumped ahead of the Cardinals, kills from Joe Kenney and Ben De La Cruz would knot the set back up at 23, with another Kenney kill to follow that put the Cardinals up, 24-23. The Tigers would prevail however, defeating Fisher, 26-24.
The third set would look the same, with both teams trading points back and forth throughout, however, the Tigers would come away with the win, 25-21.
Kenney would lead the Cardinals with eight kills on the day. De La Cruz and Matt Broderick would follow with six apiece. Paul Hackford led the playmaking for Fisher with an impressive 18 assists in the match. David Cerqua would add 12 digs to go with three assists at the completion of the match.
The Cardinals return to the court at 12 p.m. on Saturday, taking on the hosting Hiram College Terriers.
