TROY, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team drew a 2-2 tie in its first ever meeting as Empire 8 Conference opponents. The Cardinals advance to 4-6-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the conference, while Sage falls to 4-4-1 overall, with a 0-1-1 conference record.
The Cardinals got on the board just under 20 minutes into the first half. Freshman, Elise Olivo was able to dribble past two Sage defenders and bury the ball into the lower left corner of the net for the first goal of her career.
The second Fisher goal came with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. Makenzie Winslow fired a ball from 18 yards out, eventually finding the net in the top left corner of the goal.
Melissa McGowan would make three stops in net for the Cardinals, to preserve the halftime shutout. Despite being outshot 9-4 in the first half, Fisher would head into half time with a two goal edge over the Gators. Four different Cardinals would record a shot in the first half of play.
The Gators got on the board in the 75th minute, when a Sage player was able to tee up a ball from 25 yards out and find the back of the net from in the top left corner.
Back and forth action persisted until Sage was able to knot the game at two with just under seven minutes remaining in the contest. A Gator was able to find the rebound off her own shot attempt and sneak it in past McGowan.
At the end of regulation, Sage would hold the 18-9 edge in shots over Fisher. Olivo, Winslow, Jackie Romano and Emily Murray all fired two shots of their own in regulation play.
McGowan tallied nine stops to keep Fisher drawn at two heading into overtime.
Fisher and Sage both had two shot attempts in the first ten minutes of overtime. McGowan would make the stop on both the Gator shots, while Olivo and Nora Broderick recorded the shots for the Cardinals.
The second time would look even across the board as well, with each team recording one shot apiece. Logan Chase registered the lone shot in the second overtime.
The Cardinals finished with 12 shots, with seven of those shots on goal. Olivo led Fisher with three of those shots.
McGowan recorded ten saves for the Cardinals over 110 minutes of play.
Fisher returns to the pitch at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against the University of Rochester under the lights of Growney Stadium.
