PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team defeated Houghton College in an Empire 8 Conference matchup on Wednesday in five sets 25-6, 23-25, 25-13, 23-25, 15-12. With the win the Cardinals improve to 13-4 on the year and 3-0 in the Empire 8, while the Highlanders fall to 7-9 and 1-2 in the Empire 8.
Freshman
Rebecca Hay served 17 in a row to help Fisher run out to a 17-0 lead in the first set. The quick start was highlighted by six Hay service aces and five kills from
Anna Marcy. The dominance in the first set continued as the Cardinals rattled off three more service aces and only allowed the Highlanders to score six points.
Marcy led the way offensively again for the Cardinals in the hard fought match, the senior finished with 24 kills and pitched in four service aces.
Katie Mazierski notched 11 kills and 13 digs, while freshman
Alex Buhrle added 4 kills and a team-high 7 block assists.
In the third set, Fisher again jump up on Houghton quickly and finished game three on a 12-3 run with the help from four service aces from four different Cardinals Marcy, Hay,
Madison Karwas, and
Amanda Miller.
The Cardinals dropped both the second and fourth sets by only two points apiece, that included a 7-2 run by the Highlanders in the second game.
In the fifth and deciding set, seniors Marcy and Mazierski came up in the clutch with three kills apiece to help seal the win for Fisher.
Hay notched 41 total assists in the match and also added a career-high eight service aces.
Elise Kreuz led the way defensively posting 28 digs from the libero position.
Fisher is back in action for two matches at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday as it hosts Medaille College and Keuka College as part of the Fisher Tournament in Manning & Napier Gymnasium.
