Women's Volleyball Captures Two Empire 8 Victories

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team captured two Empire 8 Conference wins on Saturday as it hosted an Empire 8 Crossover with the visiting Alfred University Saxons and The Sage Colleges Gators. With the two victories the Cardinals improve to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in the Empire 8, while the Saxons move to 3-11, and 1-3 in the E8 and the Gators fell to 5-12 and 0-2 in the E8.
 
In the first match, Fisher took down Alfred in four games 20-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-19. Senior middle hitter Amanda Miller notched her 500th career kill in the match as she finished with a season-high nine kills and hit a whopping .571. Also, Senior Anna Marcy moved up to 5th All-Time on the Fisher kill list with a total of 37 for the day.
 
The Cardinals started off slow dropping the first set after falling behind 21-12, after a 9-2 Saxon run. However, Fisher rallied behind 17 kills from Marcy and 12 from Katie Mazierski to help put the pressure back on the Saxons. The Cardinals closed out the second set on an 11-4 run that included four of Izzy Smith's 11 kills in the match.
 
Setter Rebecca Hay finished with 38 assists to go along with a nine-point service run that helped put the third set away for the Cardinals. The freshman also added a game-high five service aces.  Defensively, Elise Kreuz led the way with 16 digs, while Marcy pitched in 15.
 
Fisher returned to the court for its second match of the day taking care of Sage in straight sets 25-12-25-10, 25-16. The Cardinals put on a dominating offensive performance in the first set putting away 17 kills and only two errors for a .517 kill percentage.
 
Fisher finished the second set on a 19-6 run and followed suit in the third set with a 9-2 with help from a Madison Karwas service run that resulted in seven points to put Fisher up, 13-5.
 
Marcy finished with another strong match with a game-high 20 kills, only two hitting errors, and a team-high 13 digs. Mazierski added 10 and Smith added nine for the second straight match.
 
Hay pitched in 27 assists, while fellow setter Phoebe Kane added 13 in the third set.
 
Fisher returns to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, as it hosts Houghton College for an Empire 8 Conference matchup inside Manning and Napier Gymnasium.
