PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team ran its winning streak to six games on Saturday as the Cardinals handed Utica College a 4-1 loss on the turf at Growney Stadium. With the win, Fisher improved to 6-1 on the year and remained atop the Empire 8 Conference standings at 3-0. Utica fell to 5-3 on the season and 2-2 against conference competition.
Ashley Maynard earned the win in goal for Fisher after making three saves in 70 minutes of play to notch her sixth win of the year.
As a team, Fisher was credited with 17 shots led by
Emily Markarian who registered two goals on a game-high eight shots. Freshman
Bre Socker also netted two goals in the win on six total shots while
Lauren Fazio had two assists overall.
After 31 minutes of back-and-forth play, Fisher broke through in the 32nd minute as Markarian unleashed a shot that deflected off a Utica defender's back and into the cage to make it 1-0 in the Cardinals' favor.
The Pioneers evened things up at one goal apiece as the second half got underway after burying a crossing pass, but the Cardinals answered just 55 seconds later when Socker ripped a shot over the keeper's left shoulder and into the top corner to lift Fisher to a 2-1 advantage.
The Cardinals padded their lead in the 65th minute as Markarian scored her 10th goal of the season on a scramble in front of the net with Fazio collecting the assist on the play. Just four minute later, Fisher struck again as Markarian's shot bounced off Utica's keeper and right to Socker who took advantage of an open to net to make it a three-goal affair.
Fisher will step out of conference play at 4 p.m. on Sunday as it hosts St. Lawrence at Growney Stadium.
