Fisher Wins First Conference Bout In Overtime

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team took down Stevens Institute of Technology today 3-2 in an overtime thriller to open up the conference part of its schedule. The Cardinals improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Empire 8, while the Ducks fall to 1-4 and 0-1 in the Empire 8.

Three different Cardinals scored in the game off a total of 15 shots on goal throughout the game. The Ducks started off the scoring in the first half at the 26th minute mark and brought a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Bre Socker started off the scoring for Fisher putting away her fourth goal of the season just over two minutes into the second half, assisted by Lauren Fazio. Stevens then answered back with a goal at the 45 minute mark that redirected off a Fisher defender and past goal keeper Ashley Maynard to make it 2-1.

Senior Emily Markarian came up in the clutch and put away her sixth of the season off a loose ball in front of the net with just under eight minutes remaining in the game to tie the game back up for the second time in the second 35 minutes.

The first overtime period only lasted about two and a half minutes, until Fazio tipped in a shot from Katelyn Slomba over the goal keeper for her fourth of the season and second point of the game.

Maynard was credited with her fourth win of the season finishing the game with six saves on eight shots faced.

Fisher is back in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as it travels to Houghton, N.Y. to take on Houghton College in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.
