SALEM, Va. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team dropped its season-opener on Friday as the Cardinals fell to Roanoke College, 1-0, in the opening round of the Roanoke Invitational. With the loss, the Cardinals moved to 0-1-0 on the season while the Maroons improved 1-0-0 overall.
The game's lone goal came in the 14th minute when the Maroons were able to cross the ball into the box before heading in what turned out to be the game-winning tally.
In the second half, still trailing by a goal, Fisher had two chances late in the frame with a shot on goal followed by a corner kick opportunity, but neither resulted in the tying goal as the Maroons escaped with their first win of the 2017 campaign.
Overall, Fisher was credited with five shots.
Elise Olivo led the way with three shots including two on goal while
Makenzie Winslow tallied two of her own.
Melissa McGowan got the start in goal for the Cardinals and made seven saves in all over 90 minutes of action.
As a team, Fisher had just one corner while Roanoke had eight opportunities.
The Cardinals return to the pitch at 3 p.m. on Saturday when they battle Lynchburg College in day two of the Roanoke Invitational.
