Late Inning Heroics Lifts Baseball to Non-Conference Win Over St. Lawrence

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Thomas Pasquale went 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBI while Evan Ryan drove in five on three hits on Saturday as the St. John Fisher College baseball team scored 12 runs and belted out 11 hits in the seventh and eighth innings to drop St. Lawrence, 16-12, in a non-conference tilt at Dugan Yard.  With the win, Fisher climbed to 13-6 overall while the Saints fell to 4-8.

The two teams will meet again beginning at 12 p.m. on Sunday in a doubleheader at Dugan Yard.

Fisher and St. Lawrence combined to post 28 runs on the day while each team came away with 17 hits overall.  Trevor Rumsey earned his first collegiate win on the hill for Fisher after throwing an inning of work.  Anthony Brophy started on the mound and tossed five innings where the freshman allowed six runs (two earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts.  Caleb Lee relieved him in the sixth and went 1.2 innings.  Lee surrendered five runs on five hits before being lifted for Kevin Berge who recorded one out.  Kyle Chambers threw a perfect ninth inning with three strikeouts.

St. Lawrence scored a run in each of the first two innings before Fisher roared back with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the second.  Pasquale had two RBI in the frame while Ryan drove in Pasquale with a double of his own.

Fisher's lead held until the top of the fifth as the Saints scored four runs of their own before plating five more in the seventh on five hits to hold an 11-4 advantage.

With just nine outs left in the game, Fisher came to life in the home half of the seventh.  Scott Eisenmenger led off with a single to left and took second base after a fielding error by St. Lawrence put two on with no outs.  The Saints rebounded with two quick outs as the runners moved up, but could not get out of the inning as Jack Trotman walked to loaded the bases.  Pasquale singled to short to score Eisenmenger while Ryan launched a three-run double to center to clear the bases and pull the Cardinals to within three runs, 11-8.

The Saints slowed Fisher's momentum temporarily in the top of the eighth with a run to make it a four-score contest, but the Cardinals sent 12 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the eighth resulting in eight runs on eight hits.

After a line out, Eisenmenger singled through the left side and advanced to second after Allen Murphy came up with an infield single.  Both would move up a base when the next hitter, Ryan Prevost, singled through the left side to load the bases with just one away.  St. Lawrence struck out the next hitter, but the ball got away from the catcher as Eisenmenger scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-9.  From there, Trotman and Pasquale each delivered RBI-singles while Ryan singled through the left side of the infield and moved up to second base after the Saints' leftfielder overran the ball as Trotman scored on the play.  Fisher would be aided by another St. Lawrence misstep as Pasquale scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.

Frank Carnevale got in on the action as the senior fought back and smacked a run-scoring single to make it 14-12.  After Ryan Fahy earned a walk, both runners on base advanced on another passed ball before Eisenmenger clubbed a two-run double to left to put Fisher up 16-12.

In all, eight different players notched a hit with Ryan, Pasquale, Eisenmenger and Murphy each collecting at least three hits.
